DES MOINES – During the first day of the State Track Meet Thursday, the Pekin boys’ not only got a first-place finish, they set a new meet record in the process.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Chandler Eckley, Sam Roth, Isaiah Wittrock and Ryan Millikin would make their way around the track successfully passing the baton to one another and end up with a first-place finish with a time of 7:58.63, breaking the old record set in 2006 by 4.43 seconds.

Anchor Millikin said it’s an awesome feeling after he finished third in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:50.24.

“As a team it’s great,” he said. “The 4x800 is the sweetest. We’ve had the aspiration of winning it. Toward the end of the season, we saw that the record was breakable. We all brought it together.”

As Millikin was running, the fans helped cheer him on.

“The first lap they did, then as I started going around for the second time, I heard the slow clapping and I knew we had won,” he said. “It was just a matter of if we would get the record or not.

“When we went by our student section, with 200 to go, I couldn’t hear a thing, it was so loud and I let everything I could go and had a heck of a time.”

Even though he knew he won and the crowd was cheering him on, Millikin said it was a challenge.

“I had to get around the turn with my legs feeling wobbly. I didn’t want to let these guys down so I gave it my all.”

While that was the top finish for the team, they also had other great ends to their races.

Malcolm Myers finished the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:01.77. Trever Northup threw the shot put 49 feet, 3 inches to take eighth place. In the 400-meter dash, Zack Conger came in 12th place with a time of 52.13 and Cameron Millikin took 15th with a time of 52.44. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Conger, Lathe Crochet, Quinn Ledger and Jordan Hixon had a time of 1:05.84 to finish in 18th place.

The Pekin girls’ were represented in Des Moines as well. Willoh Mills threw the shot put 31 feet, 6-3/4 inches to take 23rd place. Shea Dahlstrom, Cari Duwa, Mackenzie Martin and Remi Duwa ran the 4x800-meter relay in 10:07.13 to finish in fifth place.

Kaylee Linder ran the 100-meter dash in 12.61 seconds, taking second place in the preliminary heats.
