PACKWOOD — The wins just keep getting sweeter for Pekin senior Austyn Vogel, who claimed career victory Nos. 101 and 102 in front of a home crowd Thursday.

The Panther grappler, who earned the 100th victory of his career right before the holiday break, added onto his massive haul in Thursday’s triangular with Cardinal and Davis County. Vogel’s first win of the evening tied his older brother Andy’s career wins total of 101, and his second win put him past his brother on the school wins list.

“It gets better with every win,” said Vogel, whose brother was in attendance Thursday. “I just wanted to dominate today.”

And dominate he did.

Vogel secured 11 points for Pekin, which won its first dual against shorthanded Cardinal 45-7 before falling to Davis County 60-20. The senior made short work of Cardinal’s Patrick Lind in the first dual, jumping out to a 7-1 lead in the first period before pinning Lind in 1:27. He then won by 16-0 technical fall against Davis County’s Kale Baird to cap another excellent night in a long line of them.

“I’m just going to keep working and win as many more as I can,” added Vogel.

Also vs. Cardinal, Pekin’s Scott Entsminger pinned Kayvin Johnson in 2:42 to open the dual. Thomas Slaney earned a hard-fought 5-1 decision vs. Cardinal’s Josh Ramos, who moved up from 170 pounds to wrestle the state-qualifier at 182.

Down 27-0 after six weight classes, 106-pounder Drayton Hamm won the first victory of the night for Cardinal with a 11-9 overtime decision against Clayton McKim. Hamm initially trailed 7-0 midway through the second period, but scored a pair of takedowns and a near fall to tie the match at 7-all with 50 seconds to go. McKim escaped to grab a one-point advantage, but Hamm earned a takedown with mere seconds on the clock to send the match into overtime at 9-all. The Comet then quickly scored the first points in the overtime period for the win.

“Hamm has got a big heart. He doesn’t give up, and that’s the key,” said Cardinal head coach Tom Lamansky. “We go hard in the practice room and that’s what has cost us some kids, but I think that helps us [build our endurance].”

Then, at 113 pounds, Cardinal’s Ryan Cale claimed his first of two victories on the day with a 14-1 major decision over Brandon Baayen. Cale’s only three losses this season are to ranked opponents, and the junior has a season record of 18-3.

“He just keeps getting better,” Lamansky said of Cale. “His goal was to win by technical fall or pin and he nearly did.”

Pekin’s Chase Earnest and Tayte Schoff received a couple forfeits at 132 and 138 pounds, respectively. Brad Beam (160), Trenton Conger (195) and Michael Hadley (220) also received forfeits for the home team.

In the dual with Davis County, Pekin earned five victories. In addition to Vogel’s technical fall victory, Baayen, Entsminger and Conger all won by fall at their respective weights. Schoff claimed a 10-5 decision at 138.

“We still have a lot of rust built up over the holidays,” said Al Chapman, Pekin’s head coach. “I was expecting some of our wrestlers to be non-conditioned, and we saw just what we can get out of them following the break.”

Cardinal also lost to Davis County 64-12 in the middle dual. Cale won his 113-pound match by fall vs. the Mustangs’ Travis Morton, and Ramos claimed an injury defeat against Nathan Vaughn at 182.

The Panthers are at the PCM tournament Saturday while Cardinal will be wrestling at Van Buren.
