Pekin to host ‘Heroes Game’

By Justin Webster | Oct 11, 2017

Pekin improved to 7-1 Friday night with a 38-0 quarter-shortened victory at Winfield-Mt. Union. The Wolves were unable to fill an adequate roster, so for safety purposes, the teams played only eight minute periods.

Essentially, Coach Brent Blakely showed mercy by simply handing the ball off to senior standout Monico Requena 22 times, who rushed for 182 yards and two scores. Junior Caleb Comstock saved his arm, throwing only five times with three completions for 24 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown pass to Levi Long. Comstock rushed three times as well, gaining 70 yards, with a 65-yard scamper ending in another six points.

The top tackler for Pekin was Connor Reed who made six stops, including three for a loss. Drake Harbison and Skyler Juhl had three tackles a piece, followed by Keaton Baayen, Hunter Conger and Cameron Millikin with two each.

The final score of the game was made when the senior Harbison wrestled the wolves down for a safety.

This Friday night is also going to be very important for the Pekin football community.

They will host 5-1 New London for second place in Class A-District 6, after Lynnville-Sully beat the Tigers 20-14 last Friday. Not only is it Senior Night in Packwood, but the matchup is being billed as the “Heroes Game,” with all current and former law enforcement, volunteer fire departments, military, and first responders receiving free admission.

Coach Blakely adds, “We want to say thank you to the countless people in our communities that sacrifice so much for us.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.
