Pekin track teams host final indoor Thursday

PELLA — The Pekin boys’ track and field team hosted its final indoor meet of the season Thursday on the Central College campus in Pella.

Cory Loyd earned Pekin’s lone victory on the day, placing first in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.24. The Pekin senior topped the second fastest hurdler in the event by nearly two-tenths of a second.

Loyd also was on a pair of top-three relays for Pekin. Loyd and fellow seniors Quinton Garrels, Eli Harper and Graham Wittrock finished second in the 4x400 (3:52.74), and Loyd teamed up with Tanner Adam, Chase Earnest and Colton Lanman for bronze in the shuttle hurdle relay (37.55).

Scott Entsminger and Earnest added a pair of third-place finishes in the field. Entsminger came in third in the long jump (18’3.5”), while Earnest cleared 5-feet, 8.5-inches in the high jump for third place.

Also for Pekin, freshman Keaton Winn was fourth in the high jump with a top leap of 5-feet, 7-inches.

Eric Adam added a fifth-place throw of 46-feet, 1.25-inches in the shot put, and teammate Jared Bond came in sixth with a toss of 44-feet, 4-inches.

Pekin opens the outdoor season March 25 at its own Ruritan Relays in Packwood.

Pekin girls win twice

PELLA — The Pekin girls’ track and field team wrapped up its indoor season Thursday with a pair of victories at the Pekin Indoor at Central College in Pella.

The relay team of Samantha Wright, Gwynne Wright, Sloan Reighard and Whitney Horras won the 4x800 with a time of 10:31, and the foursome doubled up to finish first in the distance medley in 13:38.

Mallory Reed earned second place in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.24, and Mallory Baker added a third-place result in the shot put with a heave of 34-feet, 8.5-inches.

A large group of eight runners, including Reed, Baker, Jessica Horras, Mickey Reynolds, Taiylor Morgan, Tiana Slaney, Allison Lankford and Amber Lankford, teamed up to place third in the California mile. Each ran 200 meters in the event and combined for a 4:09.10 time.

The Pekin girls open the outdoor season March 26 in Burlington.
