Pekin, Van Buren boys eliminated

By Justin Webster | Feb 20, 2018

Road playoff losses by the Van Buren and Pekin boys’ basketball teams Feb. 15 ended the two local teams seasons in the substate semifinal round.

Van Buren fell just shy of a .500 season with a 86-46 loss at Wapello who improved to 21-1 with the win.

The Indians sprinted to a 29-16 lead after only eight minutes and didn’t let up while extending their lead by another 10 points after outscoring Head Coach Fred Parson’s offense 23-13 in the second period. Another 23-10 advantage in the third quarter put the game away for Wapello who called off the dogs and scored just 11 points in the final frame against seven for the Warriors.

Van Buren finishes the 2017-18 campaign with an overall record of 10-11 including a 9-11 mark against teams from the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.

Pekin was also eliminated Feb. 15 with their loss coming 71-43 at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

The Panthers fell behind 20-10 after the first period, and although Head Coach Ken Hutchinson rallied his troops to an even second quarter of scoring with each team tallying 17 points a piece, the Rockets pulled away in the third quarter with a 16-5 advantage that let them coast into the final period with a 53-32 lead. More offense for E-B-F helped the Rockets extend their margin of victory to 28 as they outpaced the Panthers 18-11 over the final eight minutes.

Junior Cameron Millikin led the Pekin effort with 15 points on 6-16 shooting, including 1-6 from the perimeter. No one else on the team shot any better, with the Panthers collectively shooting 32 percent from the field, including 21 percent from long range.

Sophomore Kennan Winn almost had a double-double when he scored eight points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Also, Chandler Eckley had seven points and four rebounds in his final game, while fellow seniors Ryan Stansberry and Levi Long had three and two points, respectively.

Pekin ended their season with an overall record of 13-9.
