By Justin Webster | Oct 27, 2017

Thursday was a tough night for area schools in the Class 2A volleyball bracket as Pekin was eliminated by Pella Christian in three sets at Pella High.

The Panthers fell 25-15 in game one, 25-16 in game two and 25-13 in the third and decisive set.

Pekin was led by juniors Haley Gambell and Ellie Ledger and senior Maci Gambell who combined for 17 kills and 29 digs.

Panther senior Whitney Johnson also added 14 digs to go with her 10-10 serving.

Pekin finishes the season 22-16 and Coach Ken Hutchinson will lose seven of his 11 players when Kennedy Coleman, Leah Dix, Maci Gambell, Whitney Johnson, Faith Oostra, Deanna Winn and Paige Winn graduate in the spring.

Pella Christian will advance to face 34-6 Grundy Center, who swept BCLUW 3-0 Thursday.

The two teams will play Halloween night at 7 p.m. in Grinnell for the Class 2A Region 5 slot in the state tournament that begins Nov. 7 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
