Pekin volleyball took very little time Monday night in sending Sigourney home with a loss.

The Panthers swept the Cobras 25-17, 25-20 and 25-16 to advance to round three of the Class 2A Region 5 playoff bracket. Coach Ken Hutchinson says he’s team has grown since they split two matches with Sigourney the first week of the season.

“We just learned to fight a little bit since the beginning of the year,” said the fourth year coach. “We said there were three things we needed to do better tonight,” continued Coach Hutch. “We had to pass better and this is the best we’ve passed all season long. We had to eliminate our hitting errors and we did that for the most part. And then we had to block, and our front row started to block again.”

Statistical leaders were senior Maci and junior Haley Gambell who combined for 20 kills, 26 digs and were 18-20 serving.

When asked if he liked his chances moving forward, Coach Hutchinson was clear.

“If we bring this kind of team like we did tonight, our chances are amazing,” said the coach. He continued, “I don’t want to suggest we’re favored, but if we can block the way we did tonight, and dig like we did tonight, and we bring our hitting errors down a bit, I think if it’s Van Meter or Pella Christian won’t matter.”

For the record, it will be Pella Christian and the game will be played at Pella High School Thursday at 7 p.m.
