Pekin volleyball runs into tough competition

By Justin Webster | Oct 11, 2017

Ken Hutchinson and his Pekin volleyball team fought hard to claim a conference championship last Thursday, but had a rough tournament Saturday at Mt. Pleasant. The Panthers lost their opening match to Central Lee 2-1, before rallying for a 2-0 win over Burlington Notre Dame. The third matchup for Pekin went to the brink as well, with the Panthers falling to host Mt. Pleasant 2-1.

Holy Trinity Catholic won the four-team tournament by sweeping each team 2-0, including Pekin’s final game of the rotation.

Tuesday, the Panthers were swept 3-0 at Iowa Mennonite.

All three games were competitive, with IMS winning 25-21, 25-20 and 25-20. Pekin was led by Maci Gambell who had 11 kills and 13 digs, Kennedy Coleman’s 15 assists and Haley Gambell’s three blocks.
