Pekin volunteers sought

Sep 09, 2013

PACKWOOD — Pekin Elementary School is looking for volunteers again this year to work with kindergarten through second graders who need a little extra attention.

Volunteers in the Friends of Education program will read to a child or have a child read to them, play an educational game or even put a puzzle together. The looking and listening activities help develop or build language skills, which form a solid foundation for later school success. The goal is to help children realize their own self worth.

Popcorn Reader volunteers also are needed to listen to first-grade children read. Reading aloud expands a child’s vocabulary, is a way to share the joy of reading and is one of the best ways to create a love for reading. According to organizers, a child who develops a love for reading gains a lifelong desire to read and learn.

Each of the programs begins the first part of October and continues through April.

To volunteer, call Michelle Glosser at the Pekin Elementary School, 319-695-3707 or 641-661-2351, or leave a message with the elementary secretary Diana Parcell.
