Phil Miller sworn in as state representative

By Phil Miller | Sep 14, 2017

On Aug. 24 at the State Capitol, I was sworn in to be the State Representative for the people of Davis, Jefferson, and Van Buren Counties. It was a humbling experience and it’s a great honor to follow in the footsteps of Rep. Curt Hanson, who was a good friend and served our community so well in the Legislature.

First, I want to tell you a little about myself. I grew up on a family farm in Iowa and was an active 4-H member. I attended Iowa State University and earned a veterinary medicine degree. After college, I joined a large and small animal veterinary practice in Fairfield, The Veterinary Clinic P.C., where I still work today.

Before being elected to the Iowa House, I was president of the Fairfield Community School District Board of Directors. I am a member of the First United Methodist Church, where I’ve served on the church council and sing in the choir. I’ve also served on the Jefferson County Board of Health.

My wife, Connie, and I are the proud parents of four adult children and 10 grandchildren. Connie has been the school secretary at Washington Elementary School in Fairfield for over 20 years.

I’ve met many people over the last few months and I’ve already learned a lot. What I’ve heard the most from folks is that they are tired of politics as usual and they expect us to work together to get things done. Just as it was for Rep. Hanson, it’s feedback I take seriously and it will guide my service in the Iowa House.

My top priority as your State Representative is to listen to you and get your thoughts on the issues facing our community and the state. I’ve already started setting up meetings in communities all across the district to get feedback and suggestions for the upcoming 2018 legislative session.

In fact, I’ve already met with a number of people from the community. Last Thursday evening, I attended a meeting at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds sponsored by the Iowa State University Extension Service that addressed the benefits of cover crops. Local farmers spoke about their positive experiences.

On Saturday, I attended a small discussion with Congressman Dave Loebsack at the Clark Yeager farm. Clark brought us his concerns about the drought and the distribution of crop insurance coverage. The rising cost of healthcare coverage for small businesses and farmers was also brought up.

Lastly, we spoke about how farmers need the tools to compete around the globe, including updating our lock and dam systems so that barges have faster access to ship crops to all parts of the world.

I’ve enjoyed participating in these conversations and I invite anyone to get in contact with me should you have any questions or concerns. My goal is to be open and accessible to you in a variety of ways. Below is my contact information and you can contact me via email, Facebook, mail, or phone.
