Phil Miller will support education

By Scott Slechta | Aug 03, 2017

To the editor:

As a career educator, I urge your support for Phil Miller to fill the vacancy as Iowa’s Representative for the 82nd District. He will not only fulfill the vacancy but he also will continue the legacy established by Curt Hanson.

Curt was committed to what was right and good in education by focusing on both the needs of the teachers and the students. As a dedicated individual, he fought for their rights and for what was right. Phil Miller has this same commitment and dedication.

I have been a teacher for over 35 years with more than 30 years in the Fairfield Community School District. I have known Phil Miller and his family. He, his wife, and his family are to be admired for their role in our community.

First, I have seen many changes in education during my career. I see the effects of state government on our schools.

While the state prioritized its funding with its determined budget, the shift changed to assisting Iowa’s large corporations and big businesses. The residual funding was given to our public schools along with additional cuts to the education budget itself.

The determined statewide budget reduces education spending from $928 million during the current fiscal year to $908 million during the fiscal year that started July 1, 2017. That’s a decrease of about 2.1 percent from the past education budget, which already has been reduced twice since the start of the fiscal year more than a year ago. Miller will fight for a change in this prioritization of funding for education, for our schools, our teachers, and ultimately, our children.

Second, I have served under various school boards. Our district, our teachers, and our children have benefited from his contributions and his leadership. As a leader, he is stable rather than brash; he thinks logically and not emotionally.

His levelheaded decisions abide by the law and are fair and just. He shows concern for the civil rights of all students. He protects the rights of all students to ensure equity in developing safe and secure schools for all. He has the determination and fortitude to serve schools, teachers, and, of course, our students.

Phil Miller, as our next representative, will support education in Iowa. He will help develop today’s children to become tomorrow’s leaders.
