Planet Awareness film series continues Saturday

Feb 22, 2018

“Time to Choose,” the second of three award-winning feature films in the Southeast Iowa Sierra Club’s Planet Awareness film series, will be shown at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Orpheum Theater.

Oscar-winning documentary director Charles Ferguson turns his lens to address global climate change in this new film showing the breadth of the climate challenge, the power of solutions already available, and the people working to save the planet from American farmers and African villagers to Indonesian anti-corruption officials and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs.

The first Planet Awareness film, “Mission Blue,” shown Jan. 21 concerned the rich biodiversity of the oceans with the present threats to their health and sustainability. The film has been requested in Ottumwa, Burlington and in Fairfield schools. This month’s film, “Time to Choose,” promises to be just as stunning and action provoking, say the Southeast Iowa Sierra Club members.

Viewers should be aware that the film contains some disturbing material about the state of the planet and severe consequences unless solutions suggested in the film are implemented. Parents might want to consider if the film is appropriate for children.

The film is free and open to the public, with donations welcomed to help defray costs. Homemade goodies will be available for sale.

The third film of the Planet Awareness series, “The Future of Energy: Lateral Power to the People,” is planned for 2 and 7:30 p.m. March 17 at the Orpheum Theater.
