Police: bicycles must obey laws

Jul 14, 2017

The Fairfield Police Department said in a press release issued Thursday it has received numerous complaints about bicycles breaking traffic laws.

“With the warm weather, there will be more people riding bicycles in Fairfield. A bicyclist must obey the same traffic laws that a vehicle does,” said the release.

In particular, bicycles must stop at stop signs and red lights, and obey designated one-way streets such as the one-way streets  downtown.

The fine for a bicyclist breaking a traffic law is the same for a motorist. The fine for failing to obey a traffic control device is $100, plus a 35 percent surcharge, and $60 in court costs, amounting to $195.
