Program participants can learn about, catch bats in netting

Jul 26, 2017

The Davis County Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and local Master Gardeners are hosting a presentation about bats at 7:45 p.m. Aug. 4 at Lake Wapello.

The event will begin with a presentation by Russ Benedict, professor of biology at Central College in Pella, about bats.

Benedict has spent most of his life exploring the prairies and woods of the Midwest and is an expert in prairie ecology and restoration, conservation biology and natural history, and mammalogy.

Organizers say the bats should start flying within the first hour of sunset, around 8:30 p.m., and the group will try netting them, but participants are reminded there is no way to predict if any bats will actually be caught.

Attendees should bring bug spray and flashlights, as they will be in the woods at dark.

To attend, register by Tuesday by calling 641-664-2730 or emailing sknox@iastate.edu. Those registering will be given an exact location for the event. The cost is $5 for Davis County residents and $10 for out-of-county residents.
