Public invited to give feedback on Alliant rate increase

By Andy Hallman, Ledger news editor | Jun 19, 2018

Residents will have a chance to give feedback Thursday on a proposed increase to the base rate for natural gas.

The event will be hosted by the Iowa Utilities Board from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center. Alliant Energy announced in early May that it planned to increase residential base rates about 6 percent effective May 14, though it requested an increase larger than that with the IUB. It’s asking for permission to raise base rates 13.57 percent for residential customers. Company executives expect the IUB to rule on that request by early 2019.

Utilities such as Alliant do not need IUB approval to alter the charge for natural gas itself, since the price of gas varies from week to week. They do, however, need IUB approval to change base rates, and that is what Alliant seeks to do now.

Residents can also reach Alliant by calling 1-800-255-4268 (which spells “ALLIANT”).
