‘Ragtime’ auditions set

May 09, 2018

OTTUMWA — The American Gothic Performing Arts Festival announces open auditions for the musical “Ragtime,” based on E.L. Doctorow’s novel. The musical is written by playwright Terrence McNally with music by Flaherty and Ahrens.

Auditions will be 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Monday at the Premier Dance Center. Registration begins 15 minutes before each audition time. Individual appointments can be made by emailing agpaf2013@gmail.com.

“Ragtime” is a sweeping musical portrait of early 20th-century America that tells the story of three families in the pursuit of the American dream.

“It’s the 1998 Tony Award Winner for Best Score, Book and Orchestrations” said Dennis Willhoit, AGPAF’s musical director for the show. “It’s a story that is as poignant today as it was 20 years ago when it premiered. Our concert version will focus on storytelling, dancing and the music. The cast, ensemble and orchestra will number at least 100 people.”

Principal and ensembles roles, singing and non-singing, are available for males and females ages 4 and older. “Ragtime” is a racially diverse show; there are roles specifically written for black singers and actors, and all ethnicities are encouraged to audition.

Singers/actors are asked to bring two 16-bar vocal selections of differing styles and a 1-2 minute monologue. If unable to provide either, a vocal selection and a reading will be provided. An accompanist also will be provided.

Further details, instructions and a downloadable audition form can be found at www.americangothicfest.org or by calling 641-777-9636.
