During its monthly meeting Monday evening, the Fairfield Park and Rec Board approved a dress code revision for Roosevelt Community Recreation Center.

The revision came in the wake of Fairfield resident Michelle Svenson delivering a petition with nearly 950 names requesting that women be allowed to wear sports bras without T-shirts during their workouts.

The petition was in response to a policy at the Roosevelt Community Recreation Center which required all patrons to wear a T-shirt while exercising.

After an hour-long discussion between board members and community members, board president Terry Cochran suggested that patrons be permitted to don attire appropriate for their given activity.

However, he said that skin should not be touching the equipment, and that towels or T-shirts should be used to decrease bacterial transmission between patrons.

The motion was made and was approved by the board.

“I feel like it went well,” Svenson said of the outcome. “Women can wear sports bras now when it’s appropriate.”
