Registration due Friday for SILT showcase

WAPELLO – Local landowners interested in permanently protecting their farms for sustainable food production will be able to speak with an attorney and an appraiser at an upcoming Showcase Day hosted by the Sustainable Iowa Land Trust 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Red Fern Farm near Wapello.

The showcase will include a tour of Red Fern Farm, lunch, and information about protecting farm land with SILT.

The showcase includes tour of the chestnut and pawpaw groves, lunch and presentations by attorney Sheila Knoploh-Odole and appraiser Dan Dvorak. Red Fern Farm is owned by Tom Wahl and Kathy Dice who are in the process of placing an agricultural conservation easement on their farm with the Sustainable Iowa Land Trust.

Launched in January 2015, SILT has already acquired four farms, with thousands of acres more under discussion. SILT’s leadership includes a broad array of veteran family farmers and advocates.
