ELDON — Plans are underway for Eldon’s annual American Gothic Days celebration June 7-9.

The Eldon Carnegie Library is celebrating its 100th year so the theme for this year’s celebration is “All Around Reading.”

After many years of restoration, the McHaffey Opera House will host the play “Smoke on the Mountain” June 7-9. “Smoke on the Mountain,” the first feature in the American Gothic Performing Arts Festival’s summer-long event, will be the first play performed in the opera house since the early 20th century.

The American Gothic House Center is asking local artists to celebrate the beauty of the house that inspired Grant Wood’s “American Gothic.” Artists can enter artwork in one of five divisions to win $40 for first place or $20 for second place in each division.

Artwork must be original and include the American Gothic House in some form; photography excluded.

Entry is free. Entry forms are due by 5 p.m. on June 4.

Artwork will be on display June 8-9 during the American Gothic Days.

Libertyville Savings Bank employees are organizing Supper in the Park the evening of June 7. Entertainment will be provided by Mike Aceto, while the meal is being served from 5-7 p.m.

American Gothic Days 5K walk/run will kick off at 7:30 a.m. June 8 at the American Gothic House Center, with registration beginning at 6:45 a.m.

Participants will start at the American Gothic House Center, run or walk down the hill and through Wapello County Regional Fairgrounds to the Des Moines River before heading back through town and up the trail to the American Gothic House Center.

Entry fee is $18 between now and June 8. Entry fee includes a T-shirt, map and medals for first, second and third place in each age group.

A barbecued chicken dinner and kids’ games are planned June 8 at the KD Center. Vintage cars will be on display June 8 at the Rock Island Depot. Take a ride on the depot’s miniature train from 1-4 p.m. June 8 and June 9.

Rock Island Park will host arts and crafts and flea market vendors June 8 and June 9.

The cardboard races start at 3 p.m. June 8 at the Wapello County Fairgrounds. Then at 5 p.m., chefs can share their talent with cast iron cooking at Rock Island Park, and Cardinal FFA will be serving homemade ice cream and cookies. Emerging country recording artist Mitch Goudy of Fairfield and award-winning vocalist Diana Upton-Hill will be in concert from 7-9 p.m. June 8 in the park.

June 9 begins with breakfast at the fire station and a bike ride.

American Gothic Bike Ride will get underway at 7:30 a.m., with registration beginning at 6:45 a.m. at the American Gothic House Center.

The ride will travel west toward Floris. Riders will turn around at Floris or bike to Highway 63 for a longer ride. Depending on the route, the bike ride could be as short as 17 miles or as long as 23 miles. Registration fee is $18 from now to June 9. Entry fee includes a T-shirt, map and post-ride pizza.

A disc golf tournament, lessons provided, starts at 9 a.m. June 9.

Get a team together to play mud volleyball; teams must preregister. Play in a horseshoe tournament or a bocce ball tournament at 1 p.m. June 9.

New this year is an American Gothic yard ornament contest.

The Eldon/Cardinal alumni also will be having a reunion during the weekend.
