A portion of South Main Street in Fairfield was closed early this morning for road work, though it is expected to reopen by 5 p.m. today.

The part of the road closed to traffic was a single block between West Washington Avenue and West Burlington Avenue, just off the square.

The road was closed so the city’s water and street departments could pour concrete.

Fairfield Streets Superintendent Darrel Bisgard said that because the city sought to close part of a state highway, he had to get the Iowa Department of Transportation’s permission to close the street.

“It’s been quite a process, something we started about a month ago,” he said.

City employees put up signs at 5 a.m. today informing motorists of the street closure, then began pouring concrete at 9 a.m. The concrete replaces a coldmix patch put down a few months ago when the water department dug up the street to fix a water main break. Bisgard said the size of the pour was so large the city had to close the street completely as opposed to letting one lane remain open.

Though this task is the water department’s responsibility, it is receiving a helping hand from the streets department. Bisgard said the water department has had to repair so many water main breaks that it has requested help from other city departments in patching the roads.
