Rock garden presentation set May 27

May 18, 2017

The workshop “Rock Gardens & Their Plants” is set for 10:30-11:30 a.m. May 27 at the Jefferson County ISU Extension office.

The presentation is free, but those planning to attend should reserve a spot by contacting Colleen Matson at the Extension office by calling 472-4166 or emailing cmatson@iastate.edu.

Attendees will learn about rock gardens. The gardens can be expressive, especially when a few miniatures and smaller dwarf conifers are added; rock gardens provide almost a limitless plant choice and a long blooming season unequaled by any other type of garden. The foliage of most of these plants is evergreen so along with the conifers, it provides a year-round garden.

Flower arranging

A flower-arranging workshop is planned from 10-11:30 a.m. June 3 at the Jefferson County Extension office.

Fairfield resident Barbara Kistler, an FTD master designer, will lead the class.

The fee is $5.

To register, call the Extension office at 472-4166.

Master Gardeners

Jefferson County Master Gardeners are encouraging local residents to join the organization.

Master Gardeners come a variety of backgrounds. They are passionate about serving their communities and sharing gardening best practices. Master Gardeners are individuals who have taken the Master Gardener training and share their time and expertise as volunteers in community gardens, city beautification projects and farmers’ markets to name a few. It is the acquisition of knowledge, the skill in gardening and giving back to the community that distinguishes a Master Gardener from other gardeners.

Those interested in taking the course to become Master Gardeners should apply online by Sept. 1. Classes are held on Tuesdays from Sept. 19 through November, plus four additional classes and a Saturday class are held on the Iowa State University campus.

The course is $195, with training manuals, which is refunded upon completion of the course.
