The Maasdam Barns Museum and Visitor Center received the Historic Preservation Rose Award Thursday in recognition of its character and contribution to local history. The visitor center is a home built in the early 1900s that was moved from its original location at Second Street and Briggs Avenue to its current location near the Maasdam Barns.

The quilt in the photo is a replica of a historic barn quilt. Jefferson County Master Gardeners maintain the grounds around the museum and visitor center.

Maasdam Barns will be hosting tours of the barns and museum from 5-7:30 p.m. Thursday as part of the Fairfield Convention and Visitors Bureau’s “Be A Visitor In Your Own Backyard.” The barns also will host “Babies at the Barn,” with four baby draft horses, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Pictured with the quilt and house are, from left: Tony Webb, chairman of the Maasdam Barns Preservation Committee; Leon Connelly, museum caretaker and member of the Maasdam Barns Preservation Committee; Joan Salts of the Jefferson County Historic Preservation Commission; Aleta Mottet, a Jefferson County Master Gardener and a member of the Fairfield Beautification Commission; and Paula Armstrong, co-chair of the Fairfield Beautification Commission.

May is Historic Preservation Month, so the Historic Preservation Rose Award is being presented to a different home or business each week.
