Rough stretch endured by Cardinal basketball teams

The boys’ and girls’ basketball teams at Cardinal High School have hit a rough patch.

After starting the season 5-1, the Cardinal boys have lost five in a row. Friday, the Comets lost to Burlington Notre Dame 62-45. Cody Streeby led the Comets with 19 points, while Kaleb Durflinger chipped in 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Their matchup Saturday went down to the last second, but New London got the win 63-62. Streeby finished with 21 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Durflinger led Cardinal in points with 24. Charlie Rachford pitched in 12 points.

Holy Trinity got the best of Cardinal 67-19 Monday in Eldon. The 5-6 Comets will travel to Fairfield tonight to play Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment.

The Cardinal girls’ was on a four game skid before defeating Holy Trinity 56-41 Monday in Eldon. Delaney Ridgway led the Comets with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jessie McElderry scored 12 points and corralled nine rebounds. This win put Cardinal at 5-7 on the season.

The Comets lost to Burlington Notre Dame 76-25 Friday. McElderry led the team with 10 points. New London got the best of Cardinal 75-66 on Saturday. Ridgway scored 24 points. Freshman Sarah Schmidt came off the bench to score 12 points. McElderry pitched in nine points.

The girls play at Pekin on Thursday.
