San Francisco to retire Bonds’ No. 25

By Field Level Sports | Feb 07, 2018

More than 10 years after his final game with the team, Barry Bonds will have his No. 25 jersey retired by the San Francisco Giants this summer.

“I’m both honored and humbled that the Giants are going to retire my number this season,” Bonds said in a statement released Tuesday announcing the jersey retirement. “As I’ve always said, the Giants and Giants fans are a part of my family.”

His jersey will be retired Aug. 11 when the Giants play the Pittsburgh Pirates, with whom Bonds spent the first seven years of his career.

A two-time All-Star and one-time MVP in Pittsburgh, Bonds signed with San Francisco after the 1992 season and collected six more MVPs and 12 more All-Star selections in 15 seasons by the Bay.

Bonds finished his career with an MLB-record 762 home runs, but connections to steroids have kept him out of the Hall of Fame.

The 53-year-old was named on 56.4 percent of ballots in 2018, up slightly from the 2017 ballot (53.8 percent).

Players need at least 75 percent to be inducted into the honorary club.
