Second City comedy troupe brings ‘Unelectable You’ to Sondheim theater

Oct 13, 2016

Renowned Chicago-based comedy theatre The Second City and Slate, the daily web magazine that seeks to explain and analyze the world in a provocative, witty, and intelligent way, have partnered to produce, “Unelectable You,” an election-themed live political comedy show. The campaign itinerary has it playing the Sondheim theater, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20.

This is the political comedy revue to “Trump” them all. “Unelectable You” combines improvisation with up-to-date minute scripts to skewer candidates of both parties.

In addition to the talents of The Second City, the legendary institution that’s incubated America’s best comedic talent for over 50 years, the Slate/Second City collaboration will incorporate Slate writers and personalities into each show. Comprising both scripted and improvisational portions, the production will explore topics such as campaign trail scandals, what makes a candidate “electable,” how voters consume political news, and much more.

“Whether you wear red or blue, ‘Unelectable You’ will have you rolling in the aisle at the campaign trail humor our candidates have so generously supplied,” said Kadie Dennison, Fairfield Arts & Convention Center marketing manager. “You will find reprieve from the political madness with this hilarious political parody ... we know we could use a good laugh.”

In this new era of viral gaffes and social-media campaigning, of rebels preaching to the disenchanted on both sides of the aisle, does anyone even know what makes a presidential candidate electable anymore?

“As countless runners-up have learned, being qualified is not the same as being ‘electable,’ says Matt Hovde, The Second City director. “‘Unelectable You’ is a shout-out to the fractured and confusing process we have of choosing a leader, as viewed through the lenses of Slate and The Second City.”

Slate and The Second City spends an evening on the Sondheim stage trying to figure it out in an evening comedy, insight and topical musings.

Through sketch comedy, improvisation and a whole lot of audience interaction, the satirical muscle of The Second City will harness the often contrarian and cutting edge voice of Slate to take aim at the election, the candidates, the spin, and even Slate itself. The result is a thoughtful, funny and completely self-aware evening that’s purely Second City, and purely funny.

“Get a break from the annoying political research calls and campaign television commercials to enjoy a unique comedy show where the audience is involved,” said Dennison.

“Over 20 years, covering six presidential elections, Slate has always been just as interested in the comedy of the campaign trail as in its drama,” says Dan Kois, Slate’s culture editor. “We’re thrilled to work with a troupe as skilled, smart, and passionate as The Second City to give our readers and podcast fans a brand new live-show experience full of the full-throated commentary they love.”

Tickets to “Unelectable You” – The Second City’s Completely Unbiased Political Revue presented by Slate — are $39 for Zone 1, $33 for Zone 2, $22 for Zone 3 and $15 for Zone 4 and youth.
