Second week at the Capitol

By Phil Miller | Jan 19, 2018
Representative Phil Miller was pleased to speak with Bob Waugh of Libertyville during Veteran’s Day on the Hill on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Hi everyone back in House District 82!

I’m just finishing my second week in Des Moines at the Capitol. I’m getting more familiar with my colleagues and the way our state government works.

Bills start out in a three-member subcommittee and can work their way to the entire committee. From there a bill that is approved goes to the Speaker and she decides if, and when, it comes to the floor for a vote.

If the bill is then approved, it would need to be also approved on the Senate side before going to the Governor. The process makes sense. It is the way our democracy works.

I welcomed visitors from Fairfield and Libertyville this week. It was nice to see Bob Waugh on Wednesday during Veterans Day on the hill. Bob served our country in the late 1960s.

We talked about issues that are important to all those who served in our military. I also visited with three young people that work for Iowa Wind and Solar. Clean energy is our future and this new company, in southeast Iowa, is leading the way toward providing more electricity without a carbon footprint.

I am reading your emails and working hard for you. Everything is a bit overwhelming, but I’m excited and humbled to be here representing the great people in our three counties.

I look forward to seeing some of you, in Des Moines at the Capitol, in the coming weeks.

I will be hosting a number of forums and listening posts throughout the district. I hope you can join me for a cup of coffee to discuss issues important to you. Below are the events that are scheduled:
