Semi overturns on highway, stalls traffic

By Andy Hallman, Ledger news editor | Mar 22, 2018

BATAVIA – A semi overturned on Highway 34 Wednesday night west of Batavia, blocking the road for about 90 minutes.

According to a news release from the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office, driver Everett James Torpen Overton of Rockford, Illinois, was traveling east on Highway 34 in his semi. He told officers that he looked down to put his drink away, and when he looked back up, he saw something in the roadway. He swerved to miss it, and that caused him to enter the south gravel shoulder.

Torpen Overton overcorrected and went into the median, before crossing back across the road and entering the south ditch. The semi tipped onto its side and came to rest just east of the Wapello-Jefferson county line.

No injuries were reported in the incident. Torpen Overton was charged with failure to maintain control of his vehicle.
