Small Farms Conference set

Oct 17, 2017

WASHINGTON, Iowa — The Southeast Iowa Small Farms and Acreage Conference will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Washington County Extension office.

The event is being hosted by the Washington County Extension and Outreach along with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. The conference is geared toward people who want to learn more about opportunities with their small farms or acreages or those who are considering county living.

The day will include a combination of general sessions and breakout sessions. General session topics include managing property for wildlife, managing wells and septic systems, local foods and marketing, prospective fruit crops for small acreages, and how to be a good neighbor. Breakout session topics include pond management, managing emerald ash borer, windbreaks, beekeeping, organic vs. natural commodity production, livestock production on an acreage, drainage management for crops, and hay and forage management.

“We are excited to be able to offer this type of conference in southeast Iowa,” said Tom Miller, project planning specialist/ag for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. “It should be a great day filled with lots of information on a variety of topics relevant to those living or considering living on an acreage or small farm.”

Registration to attend the conference is $25. Register by calling the Washington County Extension Office at 319-653-4811. The registration deadline is Oct. 27. Late registrations are $35 and will be accepted based on availability.
