It was a night of final straightaway passes for the Trojans at the Southeast Conference meet Thursday at Trojan Stadium.

It started with the first race of the night and Fairfield distance runner Ashlyn Elmore. Elmore, with a sudden burst of speed, made a charge at the last moment of the 3000-meter run, passing Mt. Pleasant’s Hanna Weber to finish in fourth place.

Taylor Ferrel, who finished second in the 3000, was forced to do the same during the distance medley relay. After leading for nearly the entirety of her two laps, Ferrel was passed by Mt. Pleasant’s Ellie Conrad coming out of the final turn. Conrad, who had been steadily gaining on Ferrel for a full lap, then attempted to fend off the Fairfield sophomore. Ferrel, giving all the energy she had left, made a move to regain the lead on the straightaway and earned the win. On the boys’ side, Jonathan Hoehne would gain some spots at the very end of the 4x200-meter relay.

Overall, neither the boys nor the girls of Fairfield could overcome Mt. Pleasant, which won the Southeast Conference meet for both sexes. The Fairfield boys only finished behind the Panthers, while the Fairfield girls also fell to Washington.

“[The boys] exceeded my expectations,” Fairfield boys’ coach Brian Dunlap said. “We easily had our best meet of the season.”

Seniors led the boys’ team the whole night. Nathan Haerr did everything he could in the distance races, finishing second in the 3200-meter run (11:13.52) and fourth in the 1600-meter run with the time of 5:06.31. Hoehne got third place in the 100-meter dash and second in the 200-meter dash with the time of 23.65. Fellow senior Austin Francisco won the 400-meter hurdles and finished third in the 110-meter hurdles.

“We’re headed in the right direction,” Dunlap said. “We ran well and now hopefully we still have some left in the tank.”

Sophomore Jordan Reid took third in the 400-meter dash with the time of 54.44. The 4x400-meter relay, consisting of Reid, Federico Ferretti, Zach Martin and Narendra Martin, took first place with the time of 3:38.26.

On the girls’ side, Sydney Burnett nearly won the 100-meter dash. Burnett finished with the time of 13.68, and was barely overtaken by Washington’s Macey Marek, who ran a 13.19. Sami Fritz won the 1500-meter run with the time of 5:07.93. She also earned second place in the 400-meter dash and in the 800-meter dash.

Marisa Repp, who also placed fourth in the high jump, earned third in the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. The 4x400-meter relay, consisting of Molly Ryan, Elmore, Abby Melcher and Brynna Bowman, finished second with the time of 4:34.96.

The state qualifying meet will be in Mt. Pleasant on Thursday.
