SPORTS BRIEFS: Fairfield, Cardinal volleyball

Fairfield Varsity

The Fairfield varsity volleyball team is hosting a tournament beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

The other four teams in the tournament are Twin Cedars, Davis County, Centerville and PCM.

Fairfield will kick off the tournament playing PCM.


Cardinal / Van Buren

Cardinal and Van Buren traveled to Davis County to compete in a triangular Thursday.

Cardinal defeated Van Buren 25-17, 25-17. Davis County defeated both teams. It beat Cardinal 25-11, 25-19, and beat the Warriors 25-5, 25-8.

Cardinal’s Cassidy McMartin didn’t miss on 17 serves, including four aces and had eight kills.

Dakota Durflinger recorded six kills and three blocks for the Comets. Danae Moses and Shelby Smith did the setting for Cardinal. The dig leaders were Amy Hart, Katey Liles and Leea Ostrander.



The seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams finished their seasons Thursday against Washington.

The A team won 21-10, 21-12. Sophie Allen, Kristen Daugherty, Ashtyn Drish and Taylor Myers each had two kills. The A team finished the year with the record of 6-3.

The B team tied 12-21, 21-19. Carin Corrick led the team with three kills. Claire Christensen, Amiah Neff and Shanti Williams each had two kills. The B team finished the year with a 2-5-2 record.

The C team won 21-10, 21-8. Fernanda Giron had 13 serves, eight of which went for aces. Abbey Gridley led the team in kills with four. The C team finished with the winning record of 6-0-3.

The D team tied 15-21, 21-19. Amanda Carminhato had a great night, finishing with four aces, six passes, three assists and one kill. The team finished 3-5-1 on the year.

The seventh grade team won all of its matches Thursday against Washington.

The A team won 21-9, 15-21, 15-11, the B team won 21-10, 21-14 and the C team won 21-11, 21-14. The D team came back from a five point deficit in the first set to win 23-21, 21-6.

Rhylie Lisk and Mia Ellis led the seventh graders in serves. Laurel Hilger, Danae Drish and Bailey Travis each passed the ball efficiently. Angel Samuelson and Allison Goodwin led the squad in kills.
