SPORTS BRIEFS: Fairfield volleyball, football

Freshmen football

The Fairfield freshmen football team defeated Centerville 28-24 Friday.

Brandon Smithburg led the Fairfield offense with 189 yards rushing on 26 carries. He scored two touchdowns and also ran in two 2-point conversions.

Trenton Hanen rushed for 79 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Michael Fritz led the Trojans on the defensive side. He made eight tackles and also recovered a fumble that he forced.

Hanen had five tackles. Smithburg, Jacob Morgan and Brayden Miller each recorded four tackles.

The Trojans will finish their season Friday at Chariton.


JV Football

The Trojans fell in Centerville on Monday 20-6.

Landon Greiner led the JV with a 14-yard touchdown grab, an interception and five tackles. Tanner Deao passed for 86 yards and rushed an additional 77 yards.

Drew Grunwald led the defense with eight tackles and two sacks. Lewis Thomes and James Kyle each had six tackles. Kyle also had a fumble recovery.

The JV finished the year 4-3.


JV Volleyball

The Fairfield JV volleyball team competed at the Indianola Invite on Saturday.

The Trojans played Ames, Urbandale, Indianola, Ankeny and Winterset. The Trojans went 8-3 in games on the day.

Paige Palmer led the team in serving by going 41-42 with nine aces. Jolea Burkhart was also 41-42, and had five aces.

Delaney Neil led the team with 21 kills. Alli Deao had 14 kills and Olivia Wallerich had 13 kills.

Wallerich led the team in digs with 26 on the day.
