Pekin baseball wins home test

It took just five innings for Pekin to defeat Columbus 11-0 Monday in Packwood.

Cade Millikin not only drove in three runs at the plate, but he also pitched a complete game shutout. Millikin earned seven strikeouts and allowed four hits.

Keaton Winn and Kolby Allsup both had two hits. Allsup scored three runs. Petie Clubb also had two hits and drove in two runs.


Cardinal softball slams Harmony

The Cardinal High School softball team swept two games Monday against SEISC foe Harmony.

The first game was won by the Comets 14-0. Eight of the nine players in Cardinal’s starting lineup scored a run. The one player who didn’t, shortstop Cassidy McMartin, still had two hits and drove in a run.

Schylar Conger went 2-3 at the plate with a double and four RBIs. Lindsey Davis went 2-3 with a double and drove in three runs. Jessie McElderry hit a triple and finished with two RBIs.

The second game was more of the same, as the Comets went on to win 13-3. Davis, McElderry, Lexi Fullenkamp and Danae Moses each finished with three hits. Shelby Smith went 2-4 with a triple and a home run.

Cardinal is now 12-7 and will travel tonight to West Burlington (13-7).


Panthers defeat Wildcats 12-5

The Pekin High School softball team defeated Columbus Junction 12-5 Monday.

Sloan Reighard led the Panthers offensively with three hits, two doubles, two runs scored and five RBIs. Kaylee Linder went 2-3 with a run scored and three RBIs. Cassidy Tolle smacked two hits and drove in two runs.

Ashlyn Zook pitched a complete game for Pekin. She allowed seven hits, three walks and three earned runs. Eight batters struck out.

Pekin (11-9) plays at IMS tonight.


Van Buren swept by Lady Hawks

The Van Buren softball team lost twice at home Monday to Central Lee.

The Lady Hawks won the first game 7-6. Caitlyn Millard and Alicia Fitzsimmons both had two hits, scored a run and got a RBI for the Warriors. Lydia Heald, Hallie Whitten, Abby Rider and Kadie Meek each drove in a run as well.

The Warriors lost the second game 10-8. Fitzsimmons went 3-4 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and three RBIs. Meek smacked a pinch hit two-RBI double.

Van Buren (4-11) plays Friday against Wapello.


Brower takes first in Mt. Pleasant

MT. PLEASANT – Jessica Brower of Fairfield was the overall female winner Saturday in the fourth annual Downtown Dash 5K, sponsored by the Mount Pleasant Recreation Center.

Brower finished the 3.1-mile course in 22:23. She also won the prize as the top finisher for the 30-39 age division.
