Freshmen girls defeat Mustangs

The Fairfield freshmen girls’ softball team hosted Davis County Tuesday at Fairfield Middle School.

The Trojans won 11-0. Ashtyn Drish pitched and struck out 11 batters while only surrendering two hits.

Mikaela Lunsford went 3-3 with a double and six RBI. Drish, Nicole Buch, Natalie Angstead and Alie Kensett each got a hit.

There were supposed to be two games played, but the second one was rained out.


Pekin gets win against Columbus

The Pekin High School baseball team won easily on the road against Columbus Junction 19-5 Tuesday.

Senior Petie Clubb went 4-5 with a double. Cole Reighard went 3-3 at the plate, while teammate Trevor Northup wound up 3-4 with a triple. Kolby Allsup, Ryan Swanson, Chase Copeland and Cade Millikin each had multiple hits for the Panthers.

Drew Wells started for Pekin and went two innings. Clubb pitched the next three innings and earned the win.

Pekin (3-2) will host IMS Thursday.


Cardinal hammers Harmony 22-1

Cardinal had little trouble winnings on the baseball diamond Tuesday in Eldon.

The Comets won 22-1 over Harmony. Chase Courtney started on the mound and gave up three hits, one walk and one earned run. Courtney struck out six batters.

Cardinal tallied 20 hits in just four innings. Tyler Albert went 2-3 with a double, home run and two RBI. Cody Streeby and Kyle Kent each had three hits. Streeby drove in two runs, while Kent knocked in three.

Adam Giltner, Trenton Durflinger and Courtney each had two hits on the night.

“We showed good discipline at the plate, and we were able to take advantage of our opportunities,” Cardinal coach Tom Hallgren said. “This was a very good game for our confidence after a tough start.”

Cardinal (1-3) plays Thursday at West Burlington.


Warriors remain undefeated with win Tuesday

Van Buren baseball is still undefeated after a 9-4 win in Central Lee Tuesday.

Senior Robby Laughlin pitched the first three innings for the Warriors, giving up six hits, one walk and only one earned run. Laughlin had a quality night at the plate as well, going 1-3 with a triple and two runs scored. Garrett Saunders pitched the final four innings, striking out four and giving up only one run on three hits.

Brandon Plecker went 2-3 at the plate and drove in two runs. Tyson Sprouse finished 2-3 with a double and a RBI. Tanner Smith logged two hits as well.

The Warriors (6-0) play at Burlington Notre Dame Thursday.


Pekin softball earns road win

The Pekin softball team won 9-6 Tuesday at Columbus Junction to improve their record to 2-3 on the season.

Bridget Fritchen had three of Pekin’s 15 hits on the night, and drove in two runs as well.

Sloan Reighard went 3-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Peyton Atwood and Nikole Arendt each had two hits. Ashlyn Zook finished with two RBI.

Courtney Comstock started on the mound and gave up four runs in 2 2/3 innings pitched. Zook pitched the rest of the game, striking out four batters in the process.

The Panthers will host IMS Thursday.
