Panthers extend win streak

The Pekin High School baseball team grabbed two home wins this weekend to extend its winning streak to seven games.

The Panthers (13-4) defeated Moravia 14-3. Cole Reighard and Zach Sloan both belted home runs. Petie Clubb had two hits and drove in two runs. Keaton Winn, Cade Millikin and Drew Wells each crossed the plate twice.

Pekin then worked over New London 16-5. Senior leadoff hitter Kolby Allsup went 1-5 with a double, three runs scored, a stolen base and two RBIs. Sloan hit another home run, and finished the game with four RBIs and four runs scored. Petie Clubb drove in three runs and Jaydan Nicholson drove in two.

Coach Pie Reighard’s team has won 10 of its last 11 games. Winn leads the team in batting average (.446), RBIs (21) and hits (25) so far this season.


Pekin beats Van Buren, falls to West Branch

The Pekin and Van Buren softball teams played a triangular with West Branch Saturday in Packwood.

Pekin defeated Van Buren 4-3 in eight innings. Tiana Slaney led the Panthers by going 3-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs. Nikole Arendt was 2-4 with a run scored, a stolen base and a RBI. Kaylee Linder drove in a run as well.

Courtney Comstock pitched eight innings for Pekin and allowed just four hits and one earned run.

As for the Warriors, freshman Bonnie Saunders struck a double and drove in a run. Hallie Whitten and Taylor Murguia drove in runs as well. Alicia Fitzsimmons allowed eight hits, three earned runs and struck out eight during her time on the pitcher’s mound.

Pekin fell to West Branch 8-2. Sophomore left fielder Cassidy Tolle smacked three of Pekin’s five hits and also scored a run. Ashlyn Zook and Madelyn Baker both had a RBI for the Panthers.

Pekin (13-11) has won three of its last five games. The Panthers are scheduled to play at Louisa-Muscatine tonight.

Van Buren lost to West Branch 10-0. Fitzsimmons and Libby King both had two hits against the Bears (12-18).

The Warriors (4-15) are scheduled to play tonight at Holy Trinity Catholic.


Fairfield JV falls by one run

The Fairfield JV baseball team lost to Van Buren 6-5 Friday at Fairfield Middle School.

Brian Buch struck two hits and drove in two runs for Fairfield. Brandon Smithburg, Giovanni Cingire and Graham Kuehl each got a hit.

Tristan Ledger pitched 2 2/3 innings and didn’t allow a hit, but walked three and two runs scored. Cingire pitched 1 2/3 and struck out three Warriors.


Cardinal wins two weekend games

The Cardinal High School softball team lost on Friday to Eddyville-Blakesburg before winning twice Saturday at the Twin Cedars Tournament.

The Rockets took down the Comets 6-2 Friday. Lexi Fullenkamp smacked a double and drove in two runs for Cardinal.

The Comets defeated Des Moines Christian 5-4 at the Twin Cedar Tournament. Lindsey Davis went 3-3 with two RBIs. Shelby Smith drove in two runs. Danae Moses went 2-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Cardinal dominated Twin Cedars 12-0.

“We have been playing pretty good defense lately, but our bats have been pretty unstoppable up and down the lineup,” Cardinal coach Hilarie Droz said.

Cardinal (16-9) will host a doubleheader Tuesday against Fairfield.

“They aren’t going to have to play their best to beat us, but we will have to play up to our potential and even better,” Droz said. “These are big games for us and I expect nothing but the best from my girls.”
