SPORTS IN BRIEF: Fairfield, Van Buren, MSAE basketball, Attack Volleyball camp

MSAE falls to Holy Trinity 70-50

The Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment boys’ basketball team came up short at home Friday to Holy Trinity 70-50.

After falling behind 42-24 at halftime, the Pioneers (0-9) got organized defensively and played a steady second half, only being outscored by two points in the half.

Suarj Pullapantula scored 16 points to lead the Pioneers. He also recorded five rebounds, two steals and two assists. Rashan Anderson scored 13 points, got three rebounds, and grabbed three steals.

Surya Sawhney scored nine points to go along with five rebounds, four blocks, four assists and five steals.

The Pioneers have three home games this week. West Burlington comes to Fairfield tonight. MSAE plays Cardinal on Tuesday and Harmony Friday.


Van Buren boys win two more

The Van Buren boys’ basketball team is now 10-1 after winning two more games this weekend.

The Warriors defeated Harmony 89-26 Friday. Brandon Plecker scored 21 points to lead the team. Garrett Saunders scored 19 while also recording seven assists and four steals. Tanner Smith and Thomas Fitzsimmons both scored 10 points and brought down four rebounds.

Van Buren then beat Davis County 70-60 Saturday. Fitzsimmons was huge for the Warriors and recorded a triple-double. He finished with 26 points, 14 rebounds and 12 blocks.

Plecker scored 12 points and dished out five assists. Will Mertens scored seven points, got six assists and recorded two steals.

Van Buren plays Danville Tuesday. Both teams are 10-1 and Danville’s only loss on the season came against the Warriors.


Van Buren girls earn weekend split

The Van Buren girls’ basketball team went 1-1 over the weekend and is now 5-5 on the season.

The Warriors won Friday, defeating Harmony 42-19. Kaitlyn Johnson scored 15 points, got six steals and dished out four assists. Shayla Filson scored nine points.

Van Buren lost Saturday 54-35 to Davis County.


Fairfield JV girls improve to 11-1

The Fairfield JV girls’ basketball team is now 11-1 on the year after defeating Mt. Pleasant Friday.

Kenady Waugh led Fairfield with 11 points. Courtney Gilmore scored and Mikaela Lunsford each scored seven points. Kaylee Watson and Taylor Ferrel each scored six points.


JV boys get third win by beating Mt. Pleasant

The Fairfield JV boys’ basketball team is now 3-8 after beating Mt. Pleasant 37-35 Friday.

Nick Higgins led Fairfield with 22 points and four steals. Landen Greiner was huge for Fairfield also, scored five points and bringing down 14 rebounds. Alex Simpson scored four points and got four assists.


Attack Volleyball skills camp set

The Fairfield Attack Volleyball fifth and sixth grade skills camp will be held on Feb. 2, 9, 16 and 23 from 1-2:15 p.m.

They will work on fundamentals of the game, passing, serving, setting, spiking, rotation work, teamwork and sportsmanship.

The camp will be held at Fairfield Middle School. The last day will be at Fairfield High School. The camp fee is $20. Contact Fairfield Park and Recreation for more information.
