With the Southeast Conference meet right around the corner, the Fairfield boys’ track and field team continued moving in the right direction at Monday’s Brookhart-Crew Relays in Fairfield.

The Trojans set new personal bests in nearly every event and earned three wins, scoring 107 points to finish third in the six-team field. Davis County racked up 122 points to finish atop the team standings, and Mount Pleasant was runner-up, just 4.5 points ahead of Fairfield.

The Trojan boys didn’t receive wins from the team’s usual suspects, Jonny Swanson and Daniel Schwarz, but Fairfield head coach Brian Dunlap was pleasantly surprised with a few other senior leaders.

Justin Hammes won the 100-meter dash in 11.43, and senior teammate Dillon Fry was victorious in the 200 with a time of 23.51 for the team’s two biggest results of the day. Hammes and Fry also teamed up with seniors Josiah Wilbur and Swanson for their fastest time of the season in the 4x400, finishing third in 3:35.93.

“The senior sprinters ran really well, particularly Hammes and Fry. The Brookhart relays is always about seniors, so it was good to see them run so well,” said Dunlap.

Another highlight for Fairfield came at the beginning of the meet, when seniors Brandon Taglauer and Alex Love and Zane Richmond and Zach Martin combined to win the Dan Burnett 4x800 relay. The foursome finished the race in 8:35 to claim the race’s commemorative plaques — the first time a Trojan team had done so in its 15-year history.

Schwarz saw his unblemished record come to an end in the high jump but still finished second at 6-feet, 4-inches. Winner Logan Mulford of Mount Pleasant edged Schwarz by an inch to set a new Panther school record of 6-feet, 5.25-inches.

Senior Aaron Gevock finished second in the 3200 with a time of 11:58, and Taglauer held off a strong field in the 1600 for a second-place time of 5:01. The distance medley team of Roan Bachar, Jake Unkrich, Narendra Martin and Riley Hammel also finished second in 3:55.19.

Third-place finishes came from Kooper Dahlstrom in the long jump (18’ 3”), Austin Francisco in the 400-low hurdles (59.89) and Jonathan Hoehne, Mason Carnahan, Dahlstrom and Hammes in the 4x100 (46.18).

The Trojans kick off the Southeast Conference meet in Washington today at 5 p.m.

“I think we’re ready to run, but it is the first time they’ll run back-to-back,” said Dunlap. “Four out of the five schools are in the same boat, so it should be a pretty even playing field.”
