The Fairfield Art Association announces the theme for this summer’s downtown art installation is “Squares Around the Square.”

This will be the 10th year the FAA has invited artists and fine craftsmen to participate in creating entries to be displayed throughout the summer in the garden nodes in downtown Fairfield. The first year were “Mannequins” on their small aluminum poles, the next year the FAA invested in heavy duty metal poles with removable bases on top and 24 concrete underground bollards. Themes for the following years included “Birdhouses,” “Chairs,” “RAGBRAI Bicycles,” “Obelisks,” “Mailboxes,” “Little Libraries,” “Flappernackle Canvases,” and last year “Musical Instruments.”

“‘Squares Around the Square’ will allow artists and craftsmen to find a way to work in just about any medium they want with our 2018 theme,” said Suzan Kessel, volunteer director of FAA. “We are also offering two options to participate — using our prebuilt 14-inch by 14-inch square wood box shape to paint and embellish, or completely creating a square shape out of any material they want as long as they abide by our guidelines. The build-your-own option allows for sculpting in metals or other material, having a shape that is open air or see through, or any ‘out of the box’ idea!”

“We are very fortunate to have Fairfield High School students building us 12 wood box shapes,” continued Kessel. “They have helped us in the past with construction, and we really appreciate that because it allows us to offer a prebuilt form to the artists that paint, but do not have the tools or ability to construct. However we only have 12 being made, so artists should apply to me soon so they can get one.”

Inquiries can be emailed to suzan1252@aol.com, or left at the FAA Studio between 1-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Guidelines for participants can be found on the FAA website, www.fairfieldartassociation.org or at the FAA Studio. Basics include: adult individuals or creative groups can participate, maximum sizes and weight for entry, must be sturdy and weather proof, square shape and attach to the square bases. Squares must be completed and delivered May 24-31, with opening of the outdoor exhibit on June 1.

The “Squares Around the Square” exhibit remains in place throughout the summer until Sept. 7 for the public and community visitors to enjoy. In July, a public vote for “Favorite Square” will take place with a prize for the winning creators.

A silent auction of all the entries will begin Aug. 3 and conclude Sept. 7, with the proceeds divided between the participants and the FAA.
