After finishing second at last year’s state track meet and runner-up in the Hy-Vee Cup this season against every school in Iowa, the Pekin track team claimed the Class 2A boys team title Saturday in Des Moines.

“This is a dream come true after coming here last year and getting runner up,” said senior Chandler Eckley. “To come up here and win the state title as seniors ...words can’t explain it. All of our hard work payed off. It’s just incredible. I trusted all these guys to do their best, and they did.”

Fellow soon-to-be-graduate Isaiah Wittrock left Des Moines with four state titles after winning the 400 meter dash in 48.93, the 800 meter run in 1:55.94 with Eckley fifth in 1:57.70 and anchoring the 4x400 that ran Cameron Millikin, Sam Roth and Eckley for a first place time of 3:21.76.

“It’s awesome getting that team title, especially after getting runner up last year,” said Wittrock. “We came out this year and didn’t want second. We weren’t going to settle for that.”

Wittrock also had to try to absorb the fact that he won four state crowns in one weekend.

“It’s just an amazing feeling,” admitted the member of the Pekin class of 2018. “I never thought I could get four state titles in a weekend. It was just awesome. We were looking to PR(to get a personal record), and we PR’ed in that 4X400.”

The Panthers scored 72 team points, way ahead of second place Mid-Prairie who collected 44 points over the three-day event.

The Pekin sprint medley relay team finished second in 1:33.84. The 4x100 quartet finished third in 44.02 and Brady Millikin got 18th in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:42.65.

The Trojans 4x100 shuttle hurdle team ran a time of 1:11.84 which placed them 20th. Seniors Carin Corrick, Aluna Olaniyi and Kristen Daughterty ran 1-2-3 with junior Malory Jones running anchor for the Class 3A competitors.

Junior Ashley Bloomquist finished 16th in the 1500 in 5:02.46 and 14th in the 3000 with a time of 11:07.72.

The Comets saw senior Mason Aschenbrenner finish second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.46 and sixth in the 200 meter dash in 22.88. His younger brother Colby was 12th in the 100 meter dash in 11.51 and 7th in the 4x200 with a time of 1:32.67 and Jarrett Greiner, Trey Albert and Gabe Reyes following 2-3-4. Albert also finished 11th in the long jump with 19’10.75” which was 01.25” further than his district qualifying throw.
