Summer camp for adults, ‘pond critters’ program planned at Jefferson County Park

Jul 12, 2017

A summer camp for adults and a pond critters program are planned at Jefferson County Park next week.

“I Wish I Were A Kid Again!” is for adults who love the outdoors as much as their kids and grandkids do and kind of wish they could go to summer camp, too.

“I Wish I Were A Kid Again!” runs from 7:30-9 p.m. for three evenings: Monday, July 19 and July 21.

“You can come for one night or for all three; you just can’t come with the kids,” said Jefferson County Naturalist Therese Cummiskey.

On Day 1, Monday, it’s all about Exploration.

“We’ll head out on a nature hike to look for everything and anything: plants, flowers, bugs, animal homes. And don’t be surprised if you find yourself heading out on a scavenger hunt or hiding in a prairie,” said Cummiskey.

On Day 2, July 19, it’s all about Creatures of the Night.

“We’ll hunt like bats and call in owls and use flashlights to find critters with eye shine,” said Cummiskey.

On Day 3, July 21, “you gotta Wear Your Boots!” said Cummiskey. “There’s a creek hike and a visit to the nearby pond. You’ll learn the call of frogs and take a closer look at the tiniest critters found at the wetland.”

Registration is required for the “I Wish I Were A Kid Again!” camp sessions. Email therese@jeffersoncountyconservation.com or call 472-4421. The fee is $5 each night.

“Pond Critters” is set from 10-11:15 a.m. July 19 for 4- and 5-year-olds and their grown-up.

Participants will explore Jefferson County Park’s small wetland.

“You’ll both want to wear clothes you don’t mind getting a bit dirty and shoes or boots in case your feet get wet,” said Cummiskey.

The “Pond Critters” program is free, but preregistration is requested. Call 472-4421 or email therese@jeffersoncountyconservation.com.
