Suspicious box destroyed in Iowa City

IOWA CITY (AP) — A suspicious package has been destroyed in Iowa City.

The Johnson County bomb squad was called in Sunday evening after Iowa City police checked a report of the package. Police blocked off the area near a U.S. Bank branch on East Washington Street. while bomb technicians did their work.

Iowa City Police Officer Chris Akery said late Sunday night that the bomb squad used a device that forced water into the package at high speed, destroying the package. Akery didn't immediately know whether the package's contents actually posed a threat.
