‘Taj Express’ brings Bollywood to Fairfield

Mar 17, 2017

“Taj Express: The Bollywood Musical Revue” will explode with the sounds of India and Bollywood, capturing the vibrant, expressive spirit of the world of Bollywood movies at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Fairfield Arts & Convention Center’s Sondheim Theater.

Through a fusion of film, dance, and music, this dazzling international sensation will take audiences on a live cinematic journey through modern Indian culture and society. The production is a high-energy celebration of new India’s pop music, Bollywood culture, and deep traditions featuring colorful costumes, joyful dance, and thrilling live music.

“This is the first-ever all-Indian authentic Bollywood musical, straight out of Mumbai,” said Ankush Dhawan, creative manager and chief assistant director.

“The dancing is excellent, audiences love the intensity,” said Mikhail Sen, who plays the lead character, Shankar, in the production. “The narrative is very strong. It weaves the entire thing together. We’ve been getting standing ovations everywhere we go.”

The story follows Shankar, a young musician, who dreams of becoming an accomplished composer. We watch the production he creates unfold — in true Bollywood form — as a dreamy romantic love story involving a beautiful actress and a noble hero defeating a villain, closing with a grand wedding celebration and great reviews for Shankar.

Really, though, it’s all about the music — dazzling, rollicking contemporary energy with enormous dance numbers set to India’s latest pop hits while at the same time representing centuries of Indian culture.

“The dialogue is all in English,” said Dhawan. “In the music, you will experience many different languages and sounds from all across India. With the music, there is no language barrier. Everyone understands and is caught up in it. That is how it has been everywhere we travel.”

Using film projection on backdrops to set the scene, audiences will travel across India.

“We have 2,500 costumes, 1,800 accessories,” said Dhawan. “Audiences will see a broad palette of colors, textures and prints, showcasing different parts of the country and their activities.”

“The reviews across the country for ‘Taj Express’ have unilaterally called it an amazing show,” said Kadie Dennison, marketing and development manager, Fairfield Arts & Convention Center. “It will take your breath away.

“‘Taj Express’ is not something you will find in Iowa, the seamless fusion of film and dance, live music and amazing costumes is going to Minneapolis following Fairfield,” continued Dennison. “This may not be the most recognizable title in our season this year, but it will be the best stage show, celebrating traditions, but also emerging trends on the world scene; it’s turbo charged, fast paced, it will be one of the memorable nights on the Sondheim stage for years to come, hopefully you can say you were there for it.”

Tickets for “Taj Express: The Bollywood Musical Revue” are $47 for Zone 1, $41 for Zone 2, $30 for Zone 3, $20 for Zone 4 and $15 for youth and students. Tickets are available at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center ticket office, 472-2787 and www.FairfieldACC.com.
