Take Away Hunger packing event Sunday

A group of six area churches is having its 12th food packing session Sunday afternoon at Word of Life Lutheran Church.

Volunteers will be packing food for Take Away Hunger.

The first shift will start packing at 1 p.m., with the second shift starting at 2:30 p.m.; although volunteers are welcome to work for as short or as long as they would like, plus come and go as necessary. Packing should end by 4 p.m.

“The goal is to pack 25,000 meals, so we need all the volunteers that we can get,” said Don Henderson, one of the organizers from First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

The group will be packing a casserole mix of black beans, rice, soy and vitamins to be delivered to Texas flood victims.

Volunteers also are needed for about one hour Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. to help unload the supplies, set up tables and equipment and assemble boxes at the Word of Life church.

Volunteers also are needed at the end of the packing event to take down the tables and equipment.

According to Henderson, the united group of churches has packed a total of 314,052 meals in its previous packing sessions.

The participating churches, in addition to First Christian Church and Word of Life church, are Fairfield Friends Church, First Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, all in Fairfield, and Faith United Methodist Church in Libertyville.

According to its website, Take Away Hunger is a food relief organization that unifies teams of people who package a special casserole mixture that is sent locally and worldwide. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It is overseen by Don and Sandee Fields of Brighton, whose office warehouse is in Mt. Pleasant.

First Christian Church is the designated Take Away Hunger contact for Jefferson County. Donations, payable to Take Away Hunger, can be mailed to PO Box 1537, Fairfield 52556.

Bluegrass Blondies performing

The family will perform at the Abingdon Church of Christ at 10 a.m. The concert will be followed by a free meal.

They also will perform at 6 p.m. at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Refreshments will follow.

A “love offering” will be collected.

The Bluegrass Blondies are a family bluegrass band that performs bluegrass, country, gospel and comedy for “down-home entertainment.” Scott and Dawn Amos and their daughters Taylor, Bethany and Hallie have been playing together since 2008 and have made many appearances throughout the area.
