Tenco celebrates National Direct Support Professional Recognition Week

Sep 11, 2017

Tenco is honoring its front-line staff for National Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week that started Sunday and continues through Saturday.

The week is dedicated to honoring the work of direct-support professionals who provide services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the community.

“Our direct support professionals are hardworking, dedicated men and women, who are dedicated to supporting the people with disabilities we serve,” said Cheryl Plank, Tenco executive director. “Medicaid reimbursement rates make it challenging to pay the wages they deserve, so we try to make sure they know they are appreciated and an asset to our organization.”

Direct Support Professional Recognition Week is part of the American Network of Community Options and Resources National Advocacy Campaign, whose mission is to enhance the lives of all people with disabilities who rely on long-term supports and services by obtaining the resources to recruit, train and retain a highly qualified and sustainable workforce.

DSP Recognition Week is one way to say, “thank you” to the people who are on the front-line day after day doing everything that is needed to support the mission to provide opportunities for people with disabilities, to develop and maintain independence in all areas of life. They work days, nights, weekends, holidays. To many Tenco clients, DSPs are not only their staff, but their friends.

“As a DSP, I get to watch our clients grow. They start out inhibited and afraid of new things, but as they learn skills, they aren’t afraid anymore. They take their independence and run with it,” commented Leslie Coyle, DSP at Tenco. “This is what I live for.”

Direct Support Professional Recognition Week is celebrated annually across the country with special events and ceremonies.
