Ticket sales set for Van Buren Players production of ‘Working’

Jan 24, 2014

KEOSAUQUA — Tickets for the Van Buren Players production of Studs Terkel’s musical “Working” go on sale Feb. 1.

Reserved seat tickets can be purchased at Community First Bank in Keosauqua or by calling Kathy Bartholomew at the bank, 319-293-3794.

The cast has been chosen and rehearsals are underway.

Cast members include Tom Allen, Dave Atwood, Sydney Atwood, Wes Atwood, Tiffany Beggs, Gloria Breckenridge, Jessie Cassens, Allison Dickinson, Jes Ehrenfelt, Mike Ernst, Mitch Garrels, Cathy Giberson, Linda Goldstein, Kara Lewis, Calvin Mertens, Linda Mitcheltree, Barb Morris, Twyla Peacock, Mike Plecker, Carly Smith, Jen Snead and Tom Voorhees.

The Van Buren Players are fortunate to have a wide range of age and a wealth of stage experience in the cast to bring this show to life. Besides local talent, some actors come from Mt. Pleasant, Fairfield and Richland. Tom Voorhees, a retired Fairfield High School principal, lives in Fairfield; Jes Ehrenfelt, who lives near Richland, was Vera in “Chicago” last year; and Linda Mitcheltree was the FHS music instructor for many years.

The unique script is based on Terkel’s taped interviews, conducted during several decades, of working people talking about their jobs and dreams. The collected interviews resulted in his book, “Working.” Their words reflect the dignity and significance everyone seeks in his or her life. His book was then turned into this musical by Steven Schwartz and Nina Faso, with music by James Taylor, Mary Rodgers and others.

Some of the most familiar numbers are James Taylor’s “Brother Trucker” and “Millwork” and Stephen Schwartz’s “It’s An Art” and “Fathers and Sons.”

“Working” explores all types of occupations, from first jobs to hated jobs.

Production dates are at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28 and March 1 and 2 p.m. March 2 at the Roberts Memorial Center in Keosauqua.
