Time to decide

Jul 27, 2017

It is time to decide. Will we continue to crowd 30+ people into the outdated jail, and then pay rent to other counties? I recently toured the current facility. If the state inspectors are not lenient with us, the jail could be shut down immediately due to overcrowding, inability to separate prisoners correctly, lack of ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance. Or because of many serious safety issues in terms of windows, doors, hallways, stairs and ongoing maintenance of aged plumbing and electricity. See the front page of the Mt. Pleasant News on Friday, July 21, for more details.

It is NOT a matter of coddling criminals. It is a matter of safety: safety for the deputies and office employees who keep the citizens of Henry County safe. As citizens, we expect the sheriff’s department and city police to keep lawbreakers under control. If someone has been violent toward a co-worker, family member, neighbor; if he is caught selling illegal drugs, or if he is stealing for money to buy drugs; if he is drunken driving, then he needs to be off our streets and highways. We do not have adequate space to do that with current facilities.

De we want the police or sheriff to arrest someone, and let them go to steal, abuse, use, act with violence again and again? Of course not. Neither do we want our county employees to work in unsafe conditions. Then let’s stop this losing game of paying other counties to house our criminals. We are wasting tax dollars every day we transport someone and pay rent to another county jail. Since 2001, $1,597,033, plus transportation, down the drain.

Join me in voting “yes” on the ballot Aug. 1. Vote “yes” for SAFETY for the staff and citizens. Better yet, vote early. Go to the Auditor’s office to avoid waiting in line. Vote “yes” to SAVE money in the long run.
