Trees given out for Earth Day

Apr 05, 2018

Nearly 1,000 kids at four schools across Fairfield have been offered free trees to plant on Earth Day as part of Neighborhood Forest’s 9th Annual giveaway.

Three key sponsors — Hy-Vee, Everybody’s and The Cambridge Foundation — have supported the program for the past four years in Fairfield, providing free trees to four different schools: Washington Elementary, Pence Elementary, Maharishi School and Home School Assistance Program.

In order to receive a free tree, parents register via an online form sent by the school, and agree to plant and care for the tree with their child. Almost one-third of Fairfield’s families have signed up for the program. Tree shipments will be arriving in schools the week of April 18-22 and even up until Arbor Day, April 27. This year the trees are Freeman maples.

Thanks to a sponsorship from Everybody’s, Neighborhood Forest will also be giving away up to 100 white pine seedlings for the general public. In all, Neighborhood Forest will be giving away nearly 8,000 trees this Earth Day, at nearly 70 schools across Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, New Jersey, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, North Carolina, South Carolina and Ohio. They soon hope to be in every state in the nation.
