The Fairfield boys’ basketball team jumped out to an early lead against visiting Albia Monday night at FHS and held on for a 61-52 victory to return to .500 overall with an 8-8 season record.

The Trojans led 16-11 after eight minutes and 31-20 at the half, but the Blue Demons charged back with a 17-8 third quarter advantage that brought the score to 39-37 as the two teams began the fourth period of play.

“It was great to see the guys find a different way to win,” said Head Coach Mick Flattery. “Free throws were our friend tonight as we shot 15-20 from the line,” added the long-time coach.

Senior Dante Cingire was 6-6 from the charity stripe and had another eight points, four assists and two steals to complete his balanced statline.

Junior Austin Simpson was a two-way threat Tuesday night, scoring 14 points while grabbing 12 boards and making five assists.

“I just need to let the game come to me,” said Simpson. The Trojans junior center added “From rebounding, to getting my teammates involved, I’m just letting the game play out.”

Cingire and Simpson weren’t the only two Fairfielders in double-digits, Carson Crile had 12 points and a team-high 14 rebounds while Collin Breen added 10 points of his own.

“We had really good balance offensively,” said Flattery. “Albia played terrific, and cut it to two, but we were able to take their best punch, get to free throw line, and make some shots and get some defensive stops to get some separation for the win.”

Also scoring for the Trojans were Mark Diers who had six points and Tristin Waugh who ran into early foul trouble. Sophomore Drew Martin collected 10 stats of his own with two points, two steals and six rebounds.

Fairfield is now 8-8 with a trip to 8-9 Centerville tonight who is 2-0 on the season versus Albia, with their victories coming by an average of seven points over the Blue Demons.
