By Justin Webster, Ledger sports editor | May 04, 2018

The Fairfield boys golf team shot a season best round of 363 while finishing sixth at the Chariton Invite, just three strokes out of the top-five as Clarke of Osceola scored a 360.

Winterset won the day with a 317, followed by Albia’s 321, Centerville’s 334 and fourth-place Creston’s 356.

Team standings

3rd 334 Centerville

4th 356 Creston

5th 360 Clarke

6th 363 Fairfield

7th 386 Chariton

8th 416 Davis Co.

While Albia’s Trent Garver was the tournament Medalist with a 71, the Trojans Medalist was Jack Weaton who tallied two birdies and four pars on his way to an 89.

Jeremy Crile scored a three-par 91, followed by Josh Brewington’s four-par 91 and Aaron Haines five-par 92.

“It’s great to see Aaron coming off his career low roundd at Chariton,” said Flattery. “Hopefully that carries over to next week.”

Fifth for Fairfield was Brad Smithburg who shot a 94 that included two pars and Drake Rippey came in sixth for the squad with a two-par 101.

“It’s very encouraging to shoot our lowest round at Chariton versus tough competition, and with a 30 minute weather delay,” added Flattery.

Tuesday the Trojans head to Keokuk’s Elks Fairview for the Southeast Conference meet beginning at 9 a.m.

“This course could produce a lot of low scores with how wide open it is and it’s length. We’re looking forward to hopefully getting better again.”
