Trojan boys' soccer squad defeated, 2-1

May 15, 2017

The Fairfield Trojan boys’ soccer team suffered a 2-1 nonconference road loss to West Liberty on Friday.

Fairfield led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Leone Gichure-Marira.

“We played a very good half and had total control of the game,” said Trojan head coach Felisto Guezimane. “Unfortunately we did not keep the same momentum in the second. We started a bit slow and let the guard down for a moment.”

West Liberty scored after a corner kick within 10 minutes of the second frame.

“After the goal, West Liberty grew in confidence and the momentum shifted in their favor,” Guezimane said. “Then came the winning goal out of nowhere. Their best player (Martin Benegas) got the ball about 30 yards out, dribbled through two defenders and took a shot to the right-bottom corner leaving (keeper) Brendon (Lunsford) with no chance to block. He took a nice dive, but could not reach the ball.

“After the goal, we woke up and regained control of the game. We chased the equalizer, but unfortunately it did not happen. It was a tough loss. It’s been that type of season for us. We’re letting many games slip through our fingers. We can only hope that our fortunes change at some point.”

Fairfield’s record is 6-5 overall, 4-2 in Southeast Conference play.

“Brendon had some good saves,” Guezimane said.

“Kolten Webber also had a very nice tackle in the first half to keep the score at 0-0. Jordan Guezimane had a great game. He was probably our best player on the field. He kept Martin Benagas quiet the entire game except the play he got away and scored the winner.

“Overall, the entire team played well, so it was unfortunate to end the game with a loss.”
