The Trojan ladies tennis team defeated West Burlington-Notre Dame 7-2 Tuesday evening at the middle school courts.

The contest was a fill-in meet for Fairfield with Maharishi School unable to field a girls team for last night’s originally scheduled matchup between the Trojans and the Pioneers.

Anatta Charoenkul and Yana Gaskell won their No. 1 and No. 2 matches, respectively, with 8-0 victories.

Afterwards, the top Trojan broke her victory down quite simply.

“I think my shots were mainly going in most of the time,” said Charoenkul. “So I think that’s what went really well for me.”

Cami Schaefer also defeated McKenzie Fry 8-5 and Nellie Higdon won 8-4 to give the Trojans a 4-2 advantage headed into the doubles matchups.

Charoenkul was joined by her partner Hermela Gebremariam for a 8-4 defeat of the Nikes’ top pair, Lydia Becker and Claire Hackenmiller. While Anatta smiles all the time and Hermela generally has a more serious look, the pair said they are enjoying the season. As for their game, it’s working for them and the Trojans.

“I can definitely count on Anatta to pick me up when I need to get the ball in,” said Hermela.

As with any good pair, Charoenkul also relies on her partner.

“I love how Hermela always motivates. Every game, every match, she’s the motivator for us.”

Gaskell was joined by Schaefer in the second doubles pairing with the duo dismissing Fry and Riley Brueck 8-3. In the third doubles match, Higdon was joined by Anna Beasley in the closest competition of the night, with the Trojans needing extra games to defeat the visitors from Burlington 9-7.
